23 August 2012: Rain day - drove to Grand Bornand for some intelligence gathering.
24 August 2012: Rain day - drove to old town part of Annecy and wandered around the lake shore and canals.
25 August 2012: Rain Day - drove to Chamonix for some reconnaissance.
26 August 2012: Montmin launch, Lafonnet, Roc des Boeufs, back across lake, Doussard LZ. Bill and I launched Montmin about an hour after Don and Chris launched Planfait due to really unreliable shuttles at Doussard LZ. By time we got up Mad Dog was already up 7000ft and “bored” so headed across the lake. I got to push my self imposed limitations by pushing across to Lafonnet a bit low, since I saw some other pilot head over that way really low. Bill was on chase taking a much smarter conservative higher outside line than I did. But we both made it over there and worked the thermals. Bill caught a good one up to 7000ft and headed out toward Dents de Lanfon, while I opted to try a different route for crossing the lake going directly from Lafonnet. Don was also nearby and we all crossed to Roc des Boeufs on different tracks, both Bill and Don taking the more standard route and thus arriving at the other side of the lake much higher and further back than I did. We all hung out over there for quite a while Mad Dog headed off into the distance toward Arclusaz on a mission to try and do a big triangle. Don, Bill and I all made it back across the lake, with Don landing at Talloires since his car was there, and Bill and I at Doussard since our car was there. Jeannine graciously picked up Chris somewhere near Ugine.
27 August 2012: Drove to Grand Bornand, took up telecabin Rosay then walked across to TS Lachat chairlift up to 6000ft. Launched and scratched around the peak for 30 min. Conditions were very stable with not much thermic development. Bill launched a bit higher almost up on the summit and was able to get above it a couple times. We both stayed up longer than any locals flying, they all seemed to only be interested in doing sledders to the LZ. Eventually glided out to land in Le Bouchet LZ since there was a children’s carnival going on in town and the normal LZ by the rink was closed.
Also took the last shuttle back up from Doussard and got a late flight off Montmin down to Doussard landing around 7:30 pm.
This time I really didn't take any pictures, so you'll have to rely on Flystrong Bill and Mad Dog for image capture.
Adieu! Bon Vol.
Nice recap, Jim. Great job crossing the lake and crossing back. On my only time crossing the lake, the lift was dying when we arrived at Rocs des Boeufs, and we were lucky to beeline straight down to Doussard. Flying back across and getting up would have been a real bonus! And I've always wanted to check out Grand Bornand - can't wait to see the pictures you guys took. So many flying sites there, and so little time!
ReplyDeleteAwesome flight Jim,
ReplyDeleteI never even made it across the lake to the other side, so don't be telling me about how far I go that you haven't. That is a topper.
Congrats, I am so glad you made the trip, you deserve a big fly and looks like your getting your share.
Don't worry about Mad Dog's flights, the place your at is his back yard kinda like Alex's here but way way way bigger.
You have gotten bit by the French bug of flying, wine, cheese and an occasional glimpse of the French Lasse's.
I am guessing the Aspen3 is holding its own, glad I got one when we did.
Have fun and keep the stories coming.
JJ Jameson
Awesome, Jim! Congrats on crossing the lake and making it back. Glad you're having some good flights!
ReplyDeleteGreat pen & ink strokes Jim! Proud of you & Bill's charging it mind set, please do not forget all the years I never made it to the top of the Dents & struggle to just stay up in the crowd. This is both your first times & already you are matching my 5th trip here, so in acuallity you are light years ahead of me! Wait till next time, it'll be contrails on all your wings. Glad Ike, & both of you killing it to the top this year...Its Flystrongs turn to write one, JJJ go get on him.
ReplyDeleteAhh but Flystrong usually provides the color, I am dismayed of his camera's plight and hopes that he bought some travel insurance to re-gear. But if not I know he will get a new shutter soon. For now we will just have to put up with the "The Flights of a Mad Dog" and "The One-Eye Chronicles" with an occasional chat blog from Slacker Ike.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed all your perspectives and with this many stories coming from France and locally I have not had a bad cup of coffee for awhile.
Maybe I will just have to kick more people off the rock more often so I can get some stories. Oh, wait I want to go off the rock too, I better get a real lap top for next trip.
@ Thom - for what it's worth internet wireless at our inn isn't all that great. I had so many problems with Skype here I finally gave up and removed it form my PC so I could just get online regularly. I also gave up on my Canon camera so even I have to rely on MadDog & Flystrong for getting a few pics for myself. So far our flying rate is about 50% so you have to find some other things to entertain yourself at times here, which isn't too hard to do with all the sites and activities nearby.
